This show, A FRESH LOOK. is a collection of Anowar’s earlier work, much of it completed over twenty years ago, when he was in the early stages of his career as an artist. At that time, he focused on realistic paintings, from landscapes to still lifes to portraiture, as seen here. The intense coloration and painterly style of his newer works all have their basis in the work he did in these earlier works. We hope you enjoy the show.

Possessing a wide range of interests and versatility, Goussy Célestin has studied classical piano, jazz and Latin music and currently performs throughout the NYC area both as a musician and dancer. She has performed in various productions featuring Afro-Cuban dance and folklore, as well as opening for distinguished members of the recently famed Buena Vista Social Club, Ibrahim Ferrer, and the late Rubén Gonzalez, as well as with the Cuban-Son group, Mo’ Guajiro. She often leads her own ensemble, The C.O.R. (Catalysts Of Rhythm), which formed its residency at the Nuyorican Poets’ Café in New York City. She is a member of ASE Dance Theater Collective, a neo-folklore ensemble dedicated to the traditional/contemporary arts of the African Diaspora filtered through Haitian music and dance. Goussy currently performs with the Ileana Santamaria Orchestra (Mongo Santamaria), and Imo Oluko and Africa One (AfroBeat – Nigeria). In addition to wearing the many hats of a performing artist, Goussy teaches music and dance in various programs in NYC.

Goussy’s personal mission is to stir up all her musical influences into a moving experience, incorporating Jazz elements, as well as dance influences. According to her, “Our bodies, our instruments, are all catalysts of rhythm, and we all have the original bass drum – the heart beat. This is everyone’s core.”

It all stARTs at home, a celebration of children¹s art conceived by artist Deborah Wasserman, founder and teacher of ART for a START, a visual arts program in Jackson Heights since 2010. The show, created over a one month period was sparked by the questions….What is home? What makes a neighborhood? What do we see through our windows? Can art be made from recycled and discarded materials? How do we create bricks and mortar with paint?

It all stARTs at home pays homage to the local neighborhood, its residents, gardens, streets and beautifully designed brick buildings. The children, whose artworks are featured in the show, are ART for a START students ages 3-13 and are residents of Jackson Heights, Woodside and Sunnyside. A large variety of recycled materials were used in producing the pieces for the show: fabric, cardboard, sand, paint, paper, glue, pastels, paint, natural elements like leaves, and pebbles.

Although conceived by Wasserman, the show is a collaboration among her, the students and their parents, as everyone took an active part in brainstorming, donating materials, assembling the pieces and hanging the show. We hope that the viewers can find tangible the excitement and joy that went into making the artworks.See More
